Using Affiliate Programs

One of the ways to make money online is to promote and indirectly sell products. There are many online shops where you can buy anything you can imagine. And most shops are interested to make as many sales as possible. One of the ways to increase earnings is to pay others to promote your services or products. Therefore, many online shops have some kind of affiliate program which allows anybody with a website to promote products and get a commission when somebody makes a purchase.
Most affiliate programs work by using links which contain information about the referrer. When the user follows this link the online shop knows exactly who sent this customer and if the sale is made the affiliate partner gets the commission. Payments are usually made on a monthly basis and you need to have earnings above some threshold. Commissions vary significantly. For some programs you get only 4% to 6% of the purchased value. But there are also affiliate programs selling digital goods where you can get up to 75% of the product price.
One of the most popular programs to make money online is Amazon Associates. Amazon sells everything from books and music to cosmetics, furniture and electronics. This makes it an excellent choice for any type of website. You can choose among many banners, widgets for few selected products or links for individual products. The only “disadvantage” is pretty low commission. You get only 4% wen you refer few items or 8% when you refer 600 or more items.
Another popular program is ClickBank. They sell digital items (software, e-books, tutorials, etc.) exclusively. The commissions vary. It depends on the product. ClickBank products are not suitable for any website. You need to have pages that are somehow related to the products you want to offer.
Most hosting companies also run affiliate programs to get new customers. They usually offer pretty high commissions (around 50 dollars) for every new customer. Of course, you can offer hosting packages only on websites that deal with domains, hosting or internet marketing.
The commission usually reflects the price of the product or competition in the market. Low commission rate does not mean that you will not be able to make decent earnings.
Usually internet marketers that use affiliate marketing do not use PPC publishing programs like AdSense. This is because the PPC ads distract users and such clicks are worth much less than a commission for one product. However, in some cases both programs work well. It depends on the type and structure of the website and some testing to determine which programs perform better.
One example where Amazon and AdSense work together is the Financial Billboard website. Most AdSense ads are related to financial problems, while Amazon ads promote mainly music, movies and electronics.
